geometric lacquered sideboards
Poliform Free sideboard
Free is a monolith made of rectangles. Listed in 2008, it is composed from stylised geometric blocks in matt and gloss lacquer, and the arrangement of those blocks is left to whoever specifies it, which is where the name comes from.

A composition, not a model
The reference is painting: flat rectangles of colour placed against each other in the manner of Piet Mondrian. On a sideboard that means the fronts are not a uniform grid but a composition of different sizes and finishes, and no two specifications look alike.
Matt and gloss are the two registers, and mixing them is the point. A gloss block catches the light of a window and a matt one absorbs it, so a piece specified in one colour still reads as several. In a room with no art on the walls, that can be enough.
Because it is composed rather than chosen, this is a piece to specify with a drawing in front of you. We send an elevation with the quote, and it is worth spending ten minutes moving blocks around before ordering: the arrangement cannot be changed afterwards.
Underneath the composition it is ordinary storage, with doors and shelves in the usual places. The freedom is on the surface, which is where it matters and where it costs nothing extra.
Gloss catches the window, matt absorbs it. One colour, several tones.
