Hotel furniture has a job most domestic furniture does not: it has to work for a stranger, immediately, without instructions. That produces a particular kind of design, restrained and obvious, and it is exactly what a hallway, a guest room or a home office needs.

The console in black elm is the piece people notice. Dark wood with visible grain behind a lamp or a bowl of keys does the work of a decorative object without being one, and because the collection is drawn to pair, it sits happily beside a bench from the same family in a hall.
