leather chairs and stools

Poliform Seattle chair

Seattle borrows from shoemaking. The leather upholstery carries brogueing, the punched perforation used on British shoes, worked into the seams of a contemporary dining chair. The chair is from 2015, the counter stool from 2020.

A detail borrowed from shoes

Brogueing began as drainage holes in wet Irish and Scottish footwear and became decoration. On a chair it does nothing practical at all, which is the point: it is visible handwork, and it places this chair among furniture where the craft is the argument rather than the shape.

That makes Seattle a leather piece first. The perforation only reads on hide, so the family is not a fabric proposition, and the grade of leather decides both the look of the punching and the price. Ask to see two grades; the difference in how the holes sit is obvious.

As a dining chair it is contemporary in shape and traditional in surface, which is a combination that suits a modern room with an old table, or a new table in an old building. In a room that is modern throughout it can read as the only decorated object present.

The stool from 2020 takes the chair to counter height, with the same detailing. In a kitchen with an island it is the piece that gets touched most in the house, and leather with visible stitching wears into that use rather than against it.

The punching is decoration borrowed from shoes, and it only reads on leather.
